Taxidermy

If there is one thing that I hate, it it is taxidermy (or shooting wild animals and stuffing them). Even so, yesterday, we visited a taxidermy store called Deyrolle (you can click here to see their website, but it is in French). There are lions, tigers, bears (oh my!), lambs, birds, rodents, deer, and even a polar bear *sniff*. In the back, there is a room covered with butterflies in frames, as well as beetles, crickets, stick bugs, and other strange buggy creatures. When my mom went to Paris a year ago, she got me a  large blue shell from the store. I would post pictures, but you are not permitted to use your camera there.

On another note, last night we went to a comedy show called How to Become Parisian in One Hour. It was funny, but I would not recommend it for kids.

  1. It is pretty easy to translate the (text on the) page. You just copy the URL that you posted, then go to http://translate.google.com,
    plug in the URL,
choose the French to English translation, and voila!
The translation seems pretty decent. It doesn't translate the text in the graphics but you can do that by hand in Google translate. Very nice website but too bad that someone killed those nice animals.

  2. I caught up today.

The taxidermy bit I agree with. From time to time I visit someone in the US who has a stag or deer head hanging from the wall, and a bear skin rug on the floor. Somehow it horrifies me, even though I eat meat and fowl, but somehow tend not to think of the horrors that occurred before the food arrived on my plate. I guess all of us are cannibals in our own way. I simply don't "get" people who hang that stuff.

Not sure what the "ropes" activity amounted to, but it looked scary. Is everything in France scary?

    Love you, darling.

P.S. Did you ever see the cartoon of a man staring at stag head in one room, and then the same man walking to the next room where the stag rear was mounted? Makes a point!

  3. I don't get taxidermy either, except perhaps from a scientific standpoint (like, studying all the kinds of butterflies or something like that). And I am *related* to people who hunt and put their prizes on the wall -- YIKES. I've been offered my grandfather's pheasant and ducks, deer heads, etc. ICK, ICK, ICK. That stuff will not be appearing in my house!

Makes me want to consider becoming a vegetarian.

  12. None of the endangered animals being sold (tigers, polar bears, rare birds etc) were hunted or killed. According to the website, they all naturally died in game parks or zoos. I don't really think it is a bad idea to stuff them and display them. It makes people see their beauty and want to protect them even more.

  13. I think it depends how the animal dies. If the animal is hunted and killed, I don't think thats OK but if the animal dies naturally, I thinks thats, well, not as bad as being killed and stuffed.

  15. That is really sad. Where did they find a polar bear? There must have been a lot of different animals.

  16. I don't see anything wrong with taxidermy. As long as you are doing something with the insides.

  20. All though taxidermy is harsh and cruel to the animals, its also fascinating to see all the animal up close and personal. Its a great learning experience to see them up close and hopefully very realistic.

  23. I hate taxidermy also, the concept I mean. I've seen some of it but of course they were animals that were already dead. Anyways I thought they looked cool because it's like action frozen...I don't quite know how to put it... I agree with Casey T. I love tigers; my favorite animal. :D

    GO TIGERS!!!!
