Parisian Rollerblading

Parisians love rollerblading. Every day, you will see at least one person rollerblading. Yesterday, I decided that I would like to try it. We ran to a rollerblade rental (we ran because the shop was going to close in twenty minutes by the time we started) and picked up a pair of rollerblades and pads (in case you fall down) but they did not even have a helmet. Not that I wanted one or needed one, but every American store would have one, so it just was a bit surprising. After half hour, I had taught myself how to rollerblade. We went to Champs de Mars (pronounced cha de mars), the park in front of the Eiffel tower, and found a little strip of cement that I could use to rollerblade. I fell down about 5 times, but thankfully not on my head. Next up was a little tour along the Seine R. and a strawberry lemon ice cream cone. We finally went back to the rental shop and took the Metro (Paris subway) home.

That night was the "night of the museums" where all the museums in Paris are free, so we went to the army museum which shows the weapons, clothing, and lifestyle of soldiers from battles in history like WWI, WWII, and some of Napoleon's battles. Overall, a nice day.

  1. Very nice picture! It's a little fuzzy; was it cropped to take out the background?

You know me; I think that we go overboard with some safety stuff. It can take all the fun away. But I especially recommend those wrist pad things because you remember that I told you about breaking my arm just above my wrist while skateboarding at just about your age? More pictures! More pictures! (everyone chant in unison so that Lauren will hear us all the way across the Atlantic).

    Your Dad

  2. MORE PICTURES!

I agree with your dad -- Americans go a bit wild about some safety stuff. Like, a helmet on a tricycle while riding on the sidewalk?! I think the parents around here are a wee bit paranoid.

I'm surprised that you did not already know how to rollerblade. California is rollerblading central! Or, at least it was when I lived there.

This reminds me. My kids are begging for rollerskates. Think I will purchase today -- with wrist pads, I guess!

  4. To elaborate for Marilyn:

When you start rollerblading, you are not going very fast. But you are unstable, so you fall forwards or especially backwards. You instinctively stretch out your hands to stop your fall so those wrist pad thingies (with the metal plates inside) are excellent. Many will disagree with me about the usefulness of the other things and whether or not they take away too much fun. But if you go fast, a helmet is good.

    These kids wear everything ;-)

M, soon your kids will do this. Aren't you looking forward to that?
